Chupicuaro Venus Figure

500 BC to 100 BC

8 1/2″ tall

A fantastic Chupicuaro Venus figure from Guanajuato, Mexico. This hollow ceramic is a beautiful example of a rare type.

She is sculpted standing with both hands to her swollen belly as a fertility gesture. Her head is elongated and she has a very abstract face.

These scarce sculptures are known for their vibrant red slip and complex geometric painted designs. This one is wonderfully executed.

It is in excellent condition with no breaks, repairs or restoration. There is some minor touch ups to the paint but otherwise, it’s in as found condition.

Ex Dr R Fernandez MD collection. Acquired in the 1940s.
