Colima Seated Dwarf Figure

100 BC to 250 AD

10 1/4″ tall by 6 1/2″ wide

A charming and nice Comala dwarf figure from Colima, Mexico. This piece is slipped in a beautiful brownware color and has great manganese deposits.

He is sculpted in a squatting position while resting his rear on the ground. Both hands are shown just above the knees, and he has a slight hunchback. His face is nicely done, and he has a calm look to him. The spout on top is flared and adds a dramatic look to this example.

Dwarfs were celebrated in ancient Mesoamerica for being different. They were considered “touched by the hands of the Gods”. It is common to see them on Maya vases with painted royal court scenes.

Interestingly, in West Mexican art, only the Colima culture made ceramic effigies of dwarfs. Another ancient mystery we may never know the answer to.

Ex Dr R Fernandez collection. Acquired in the 1940s.
