A beautiful ceramic hunchback dwarf figure from the Comala area of Colima, Mexico. This example is larger than most and in mint condition with no breaks, repairs or restoration. 

He is slipped in a gorgeous redware and has nice incising. The sculpting is well balanced and he has an elegant face. 

Wonderful deposits attest to its ancient age!

Dwarfs have always held a special place in ancient Mesoamerica. The Colima culture celebrated them with these clay effigies, while the Maya painted them on the cylinder vases when depicting Royal court scenes.

Ex Sidney Newman collection from Beverly Hills, California. He was the co-author with Hasso Von Winning on the book “The Shaft Tomb Figures of West Mexico” in 1974. This piece was acquired in the 1960s.
