MAYA PRE-CLASSIC ALABASTER MASK

200 BC to 200 AD

7” tall by 5” wide

A very rare Maya stone Pre-Classic mask made from translucent alabaster. It is beautifully carved with a heavy brow, deep recessed eyes and age lines under his cheeks. The cinnabar on the piece makes a reddish glow when subjected to a light source.  The conically drilled holes on the temples were for attachment. It is most likely the depiction of a Maya ruler.

Ex Paul Scipione collection from Leominster, MA. Collected in the 1950s.
