Olmec Crawling Figure

1000 BC to 600 BC

4 1/2″ tall by 5″ long

A very rare Olmec crawling figure from Veracruz, Mexico. This piece is rendered in a kaolin slip with pink highlights.

It’s a male figure with a very expressive face. The eyes are thin and he has a downturned mouth, along with an elongated head.

Olmec crawlers usually depict a baby. This would be considered an adult and is more unusual and seldom seen.

There is an old collection number on the bottom of his leg.

Ex Dr. Peter Arnovick collection from San Francisco. Acquired in the 1970s.
